Medicines for Muheza

This charity has been supported by our community for over 25 years. Our annual service to raise funds will be held at St Mary’s, Chieveley, on St. Luke's Day, Sunday 18 October 2020 at 9.30am.

Last year, Drs Karilyn and Richard Collins showed a film about the exchange programme they had done with some British teenagers/young adults who had suffered bereavement, comparing their experiences with orphans in Muheza. It was incredibly moving.

This year, they will make a presentation to be shown at the service or online, to give us the latest information. They have said that £1000 was sent out to Muheza for PPE at the start of the Covid crisis as the hospital had not been provided with any. They bought an infrared forehead thermometer to screen in Outpatients and Casualty as well as supplies of masks, gloves, aprons and visors. Staff are trying to reduce the spread of the virus amongst the villages by using a new app for palliative care patients in order to keep in touch, and to reduce unnecessary travel. The hospice, of course, plays a very important role in Covid disease with symptom control and use of morphine in the villages.

Specialist training also continues as the Government District Hospital opens in Lusanga (just 2 miles away), and Muheza will be more of a specialist referral hospital.

I am absolutely delighted that last year we exceeded our £5500 target by raising £5762.20 including Gift Aid. I really hope we will be able to do the same this year when the work there is actively changing and saving so many lives, with very limited resources.

If you are unable to attend the service, but would still like to donate, donations can be made by cash or cheque (payable to Medicines for Muheza) or standing order. If you do the latter, please let me know so that I can make sure we claim any gift aid where appropriate.
