Medicines for Muheza Update

On Sunday 21 October, Drs Karilyn and Richard Collins came to tell us more about the incredible work going on at St Augustine’s Hospital in Muheza, Tanzania. They showed the wonderful and moving film that had been shown at Café Church last year and they gave an update from their visit to Muheza earlier this month.

They told us about people with cancer being able to die pain-free at home, surrounded by family, as a result of the palliative care they receive from St Augustine’s.

They talked about the challenges so many children face, who have lost parents to AIDS, many of whom are also HIV positive but healthy because of the medication and care they receive. Many have had such disruption to their education that some of the work being done is also to empower these young people to gain skills to enable them to support themselves.

Now, because of the comprehensive treatment programme for pregnant women at the hospital, nearly all the babies born there are free of the disease, even from HIV positive mothers, many of whom only discover they are HIV positive when they come for a hospital check-up.

The brilliant work at the hospital is helping to save lives, reduce pain and is bringing to many precious dignity and hope.

We have had a fantastic response so far but it is not too late if you would still like to donate! Donations can be made by cash or cheque (payable to Medicines for Muheza) or standing order. If you do the latter, please let me know so that I can make sure we claim any gift aid where appropriate.
