Spring Litter-Picking

It’s with mixed emotions that we share this update regarding our recent Spring clean across the village.

While it was immensely satisfying to collect a massive volume of litter (see picture), it was also somewhat baffling to see the diversity of the rubbish and all the more distressing to see the scale of it. We suspect some will have blown out of open bins, while other items are harder to understand – including a chain, batteries, hosepipe and even a 3 metre pipe!

For many years now, Mary and a small team of adults have been participating in the national Great British Spring Clean litter-pick. For the past two years, they have collaborated with our village Scout Group – while the adults focussed on the faster approach routes, the Scouts, Cubs and Beavers cleared roads, tracks and other public areas within the village. The young people shared how shocked they were by what they found, and a number spoke passionately about the impact on wildlife.

Litter Pick

This year, you might also have spotted the young people washing down some of the road signs - a somewhat ingenious technique was adopted by one of the Scouts for the higher areas.

We’d also like to thank a number of others who regularly litter-pick across the village, including Robin who told us that he’d collected about 30 bags this year (on top of that shown in the picture).

Thanks,

Mary Lesley-Smith (Spring Clean Co-ordinator)

Sarah Dunnett (3rd Chieveley Group Scout Leader)
